The Process
Agreement on setting and theme for portrait: The client(s) and artist have discussions relating to the setting/theme for the portrait of the individual(s). Helpful/useful information for creating this ‘theme’ would include the persons personality, hobbies, favorite activities and places, life molding events, lifestyle, work, upbringing, regional influences, heroes, supported causes…….really anything that will help define the character of the subject in an endearing manner. “As the artist, I demand that the themes/settings not be trendy or overpowering so as to stray from the primary goal of creating a timeless portrait.” All composition or subject items including clothing, jewelry, footwear, background buildings, etc. must be as timeless and non-descript as possible.
Take photographs of person(s) in selected setting: The actual portrait is created working from several photographs of the subject(s) and the setting. Therefore, the client and artist set a time and date for a photo shoot session with the goal of getting all the photographs necessary for creating the portrait. The photo shoot usually takes 1 to 2 hours with the artist directing certain poses for the subject in 1 or more locations within the chosen setting. Second photo shoots in the same and/or alternate setting is sometimes required or desired. The first photo shoot charge is $300. and that includes all film, processing, and print costs. If the setting locations is beyond a 3 hour auto travel distance, the extra expenses will be negotiated with the client.
Process and make prints of photographs: Artist develops and/or processes all photos taken; digital and /or traditional film. Enlargements of select key photo frames will also be made to provide a better feel for the final composition of the portrait.
Choose photographs: Artist and client set a date and time for reviewing the photographs. Artist will direct and suggest composition ideas and select photos that would facilitate the execution of the actual portrait.
Create draft composition: Artist creates a small draft composition (usually 11”x17” +/-) using photocopies of the photos chosen for the artwork. Cut and paste, colored pencils, and other means are employed to create a sample representation of what the larger final piece will look like.
Present draft composition to client: Artist and client meet once more to review the draft composition. Depending on the client(s) home location, a copy of the draft composition can be mailed out for a subsequent conference call meeting to save travel time and expenses. Artist and client agree on draft composition or make constructive changes to allow the process to continue on to the next step.
Commission contract signed with deposit to start and/or obtain queue position: Client signs off on draft composition and then provides the 50% deposit in order to be placed in queue; or if client is next in queue deposit will allow the artist to commence artwork.
Notification of actual start day + timely progress updates: Artist will notify, by phone or e-mail, the actual start day of the artwork. The draft composition serves as the blueprint for the actual piece which is first completely hand drawn on paper to the same scale and dimensions as the canvas or wood panel. Timely progress reports will be sent by the artist to the client upon reaching certain milestones.
Notification of completed artwork: Piece is completed and signed. Artist will notify client(s) of the completion. A date and time is set for the first viewing and/or unveiling per the desire of the client(s). Location for the first viewing can be negotiated per the client(s) desires and impact towards the actual recipient(s).
First viewing/final payment/possession taken of finished work: A date and time is set for the first viewing and/or unveiling per the desire of the client(s). Location for the first viewing can be negotiated per the client(s) desires and impact towards the actual recipient(s). If client and actual recipient are different people, client may elect to have first viewing prior to the first viewing/unveiling for the recipient. Final payment for completed is due upon receipt of artwork.
